Chapter Briefs: The Contract for Each Chapter

Every chapter carries an operational brief: purpose, objective, summary, required setup, required payoff, concepts introduced, what must not be repeated, how it connects to the previous chapter, and what it prepares for the next. Briefs are versioned and lock when the chapter is approved.

The Problem

Why this is hard

Long manuscripts have problems that short documents do not.

The Problem

Chapters get written without a clear purpose. You know you need a chapter about X, but not what it must accomplish, what it must set up, or what it must not repeat.

Why It Gets Harder

A chapter brief is not a summary. It is a contract: what this chapter must deliver, what it must set up for the next, what it must not repeat from earlier chapters, and what concepts it introduces. Writing one for each of 20 chapters by hand is exhausting.

How Inkloom Approaches It

When you promote from outline, every outline chapter node becomes a draftable Chapter record with a full ChapterBrief copied from the outline node's fields. Each field has its own Generate button for per-field regeneration, plus Copy to copy the full brief as structured text. Every change to the brief is saved as a version, and you can restore any previous version. When a chapter is approved, its brief locks: you must reopen the chapter to edit or regenerate it. The first chapter knows it is first and sets prevConnection and requiredSetup to None instead of referencing a non-existent previous chapter.

What You Control

You can edit every brief field. You can regenerate any field independently. You can view and restore the full version history of every brief. The brief is a guide, not a cage, until the chapter is approved, at which point it becomes the contract the chapter was approved against.
