Manuscript Import: Bring Existing Writing Into Inkloom
Import an existing manuscript in DOCX, PDF, Markdown, or TXT format. Inkloom preserves every word you wrote, detects chapter structure, and reconstructs the full project state around your writing. Non-destructive. Works without AI.

Why this is hard
Long manuscripts have problems that short documents do not.
You have already written part or all of a manuscript in another tool. Starting over in Inkloom would mean losing your work or copy-pasting thousands of words and rebuilding the structure by hand.
A manuscript is not just text. It has chapters, sections, front matter, back matter, epigraphs, images, and formatting. Detecting that structure from a DOCX or PDF is hard. Doing it without destroying the original is harder. And rebuilding a Blueprint, Outline, Voice Profile, and continuity records from existing prose requires understanding what the manuscript is about, not just how it is formatted.
When creating a new project, you can choose Import Existing Manuscript instead of starting from a concept. Upload a DOCX, PDF, Markdown, or TXT file. Before anything is parsed, Inkloom saves an immutable copy of the original with a SHA-256 hash. Then it parses the manuscript into source blocks (paragraphs, headings, chapter headings, blockquotes, epigraphs, images, section breaks) with confidence scores. Chapter detection uses multiple evidence signals: Chapter N, Roman numerals, heading styles, page breaks, and repeated typography. After parsing, you get a fidelity report, an em dash preflight check, an AI-speech pattern check, and an editable structure review. You choose an import intent (keep as written, keep for now, preserve but restructure, or rethink). Inkloom asks adaptive questions about your plans that the manuscript does not reveal. Then it reconstructs the full project state: Concept, Blueprint, Outline, Chapters, retrospective Chapter Briefs, Voice Profile, and continuity records, all starting as proposed or draft.
Everything. Nothing inferred becomes irreversible. Imported chapters receive explicit protection states (Protected Original, Suggestions Only, Normal Editing). AI cannot rewrite protected prose unless you unlock it. Extracted continuity facts start as proposed, not canonical. A character's lie in dialogue does not become world canon. The original snapshot is always recoverable.
What other Inkloom features interact with it
Concept
Describe the book you want to write. Title, type, concept, audience, primary outcome, desired reader experience, tone, length, and research needs. Cascade generation builds each field on the last.
Blueprint
Structured, editable fields matched to your book type. Lock what is settled. Locked fields become canonical. Everything generated afterward must respect them. Full revision history on every field.
Outline
Hierarchical outline with parts, sections, chapters, scenes, lessons, exercises, and appendices. Two-phase generation. Every chapter carries an operational brief. Drag and drop to reorder. Validation flags problems before they cost you.
Chapter Editor
A real rich-text manuscript editor with autosave, full version history, focus mode, find and replace, VS Code-style keyboard shortcuts, a context menu with AI actions, and section-level operations. AI proposals arrive as side-by-side diffs. Your text is never overwritten.
Continuity
Facts are extracted from your chapters into structured records with fact types, entity labels, confidence percentages, and source passages. Proposed facts promote to canonical with one click. Conflicts become cards. Nothing is ever silently resolved.
Voice Pass
Define your voice profile: formality, humor, emotional intensity, rhythm, vocabulary, signature phrases, banned phrases. The Voice Pass uses a two-stage pipeline: instant deterministic detection of dozens of pattern families, then LLM evaluation that checks each candidate against your own approved chapters before flagging it. Every proposed change shows original, revision, reason, and rule.
Context Trace
Every AI-made version in a chapter's History carries a Trace button. One click shows exactly what Inkloom knew when it created that version: the model, the prompt template and its version, the timestamp, and every context item with whether it was always included or retrieved by relevance.
